Inside PSG’s secret €60 million plot to snatch Porto’s most valuable asset

PSG are set to trigger a €60 million release clause to land the signing of Porto captain Diogo Costa this summer.

PSG have identified Porto captain Diogo Costa as a potential summer signing despite Matvei Safonov’s reliability in between the sticks.

According to an update by Portuguese outlet Mercado Azul (via Le10Sport), PSG have accelerated negotiations in recent days with Porto with the intention of permanently signing star goalkeeper Costa before the start of the World Cup.

While sporting director Luis Campos has reiterated the club’s stance on stalling all transfer and contract renewals till the Champions League final against Arsenal, internal talks are progressing for high-profile signings between Paris Saint-Germain and other sides. He said: “For us, regarding the transfer window, and this is a decision we made with our coach and the president, our transfer activity has been completely stopped for several weeks.”

This interest in the 26-year-old Portuguese goalie marks PSG’s lack of confidence in Safonov, who has played incredibly well throughout the season, relegating Lucas Chevalier to second choice. However, it seems like Luis Enrique is not ready to hand the Russian a secure job in front of the goal. Costa’s imminent transfer would open the door for Chevalier’s departure, who came from LOSC Lille on a €40 million deal last summer.

Luis Campos is working behind the scenes with Jorge Mendes, the Porto goalkeeper’s agent, to gather more information on the player before moving forward with the transfer. Les Parisiens have the option of triggering the €60 million release clause that was inserted in Costa’s contract when he renewed until 2030.

More details are expected to be revealed in the coming days, and watch this space to stay updated.
