Luis Enrique applauds Renato Marin’s maturity as PSG verge on Ligue 1 title

PSG head coach Luis Enrique lauds youngster Renato Marin after first clean sheet.

PSG boss Luis Enrique briefly praised third-choice goalkeeper Renato Marin following his side’s narrow victory over Brest.

Speaking in the post-match press conference (via Foot Mercato and Ligue 1+) after Les Parisiens’ 1-0 win against Brest, the Spanish boss was quick to laud teenage goalie Marin for stepping up for his team as he kept his first clean sheet. Enrique said, “Renato Marin made some top-level saves. He’s very young. He can still improve. He was courageous. He did a very good job. I want the players to be ready, and that’s what we did with Renato.”

The Italian youth international made his debut in the 2-2 draw versus Lorient on May 2, and since then, he has proved to be a rising competitor for the second-choice goalkeeper role for next season. Enrique has put Lucas Chevalier and Matvey Safonov in between the sticks as part of his rotation. Now with the Ligue 1 title almost secured, he bet on the 19-year-old to rest the Russian after his Champions League outing against Bayern Munich.

Key saves that kept PSG’s clean sheet

The Sรฃo Paulo native capitalized on the rare opportunity to start and made crucial first-half saves to keep Brest at bay. He came out of his box in the 23rd-minute to intercept Kamory Doumbia, and next made a stellar save of Raphaรซl Le Guen’s shot. He was called into action soon in the 33rd-minute when he made a fine save of Dina Ebimbe’s strike.

Following the visitors’ push in attack in the first-half, PSG took control of the match as Brest were content to defend. Except for an aerial clearance late, Marin stood firm before his goalpost and helped the league leaders virtually seal the title.

Marin acknowledged the PSG fans’ and the coach’s support in his post-match interview as he marked the abilities that helped him throughout the game. He said, “Thank you so much. I thank the fans. I’m very emotional. They are incredible. I think being a goalkeeper isn’t an easy position. I had to stay focused. I was able to make a few saves to help out. I’m an aggressive goalkeeper. I like to challenge attackers. I’m not afraid. You have to be crazy to be a goalkeeper.”
