Despite what many believe, PSG has a rich history at the European level and has played in several finals across different continental competitions. Let’s take a look at them.
Over the last decade, PSG have become one of the most popular clubs in the world and one of the most influential sports brands internationally.
From a sporting perspective, despite their absolute dominance in domestic competitions, they’ve struggled to win a European title.
Their consistent qualification for the UEFA Champions League, thanks to their domestic success, has not translated into lifting the trophy, as it remains the most challenging competition in the world.
The closest they’ve come to claiming this prestigious title was in 2020, when they faced Bayern Munich in the final.
Unfortunately, they lost 1-0 to a goal scored by their former academy player, Kingsley Coman. However, this isn’t the only European final PSG have contested, and we’ll delve into their history below.
How many European finals have PSG played in their history?
The first European final Paris Saint-Germain played ended in victory, as they won the 1996 Cup Winners’ Cup. This match, held on 8 May, saw PSG defeat Rapid Vienna 1-0.

Following this triumph, they qualified for the UEFA Super Cup, played on 15 January 1997. However, they were soundly beaten by Juventus with a staggering aggregate score of 9-2. PSG lost the first leg 6-1 and the second leg 3-1.
Later that same year, on 14 May, the Parisian side reached another Cup Winners’ Cup final, this time facing FC Barcelona. Unfortunately, they lost 1-0.
A few years later, on 7 August 2001, PSG made it to the final of a tournament not officially recognised by many but still organised by UEFA — the Intertoto Cup. In the first leg of that final, they drew 0-0 against Brescia, while the second leg ended 1-1.
Finally, as previously mentioned, the most recent European final PSG have contested was on 23 August 2020, when they faced Bayern Munich in Lisbon, Portugal. Unfortunately, they lost that match 1-0.
